Enrichment
Metadata contains the information that describes the properties of the content – in fact this contains the data about the data. For instance: a newsletter has a publication date, an author, a publisher and the language in which it is written. The explicit registration of metadata has the advantage that content is easier to find. Sites and CMSes use metadata for targeted filtering, searching and navigating.
To fully use the potential of a CMS it is essential to enrich the content during migration.
Missing metadata can still be added by using the following three techniques:
- Metadata from the context
Based on the inventory results, migration rules can be created to collect or determine metadata based on the context. For instance using the breadcrumbs, the navigation, the related content or by getting insight in the places where content is used, metadata can automatically be assigned.
- Metadata from other sources
It is possible to create a connection with other systems for the recognition of patterns and linking metadata.
- Metadata from files
Metadata can be retrieved from other files like web pages, Excel-, Word- and PDF-documents, databases, etc. This way it is not only possible to bring across existing data, but also to enhance the collection of metadata.
