The future of Documentum: a LEAP forward?

by Sjoerd Alkema, on Feb 13, 2017 3:56:12 PM

A few weeks ago, OpenText completed the acquisition of Documentum. In various publications OpenText mentioned that it will continue to invest in all products from the Documentum suite that the firm acquired through the acquisition of Dell EMC's enterprise content division (ECD), such as D2, Webtop, xCP, Document Sciences and Captiva.

However, it looks like OpenText is focusing primarily on LEAP, the cloud-based content app platform. My expectation is that OpenText, despite the support of the other solutions, will try to migrate Documentum users to LEAP. The “older” Documentum and OpenText CS systems will act as back-end.

Migrate Documentum to OpenText

If that is true, it is a logical step. The ECM market is shifting and, in particular, enterprise file sync and share solutions, such as Box, Google Drive and Dropbox, appear to capture the ECM market. A more cloud-based solution that allows content services to be developed, such as LEAP, would fit well in this trend in the ECM market.

Social collaboration
The question is whether integration with LEAP will be successful. In the past, both Documentum and OpenText have attempted to introduce similar cloud-based, social collaboration applications (Sincplicity and Tempo Social), but that has not proven to be very successful.

In addition, switching to LEAP also brings challenges. In particular, the migration of the current content processes and the applications that have already been developed in Documentum and/or OpenText is not easy. You'll also have to go through a process to transform content, restructure and enhance it with metadata.

What the future of Documentum will be is still unclear. Are you migrating Documentum to OpenText? Or Lea? Whatever choice you make, there are consequences.
